This role will be centred around the west coast of Cumbria, as this area has been identified as a priority for engaging local communities to take action for red squirrel recovery.
Our ideal candidate will have a passion for our local native red squirrels and be able to work with communities in the target area to help protect this endangered species.
Community Engagement Officer – Red Squirrel Recovery Network
Location: Gosling Sike / Cumbrian West Coast
Salary: £29,447 per annum, based on a 35-hour week
Contract length: Fixed term until 31 December 2029
About the project
The Red Squirrel Recovery Network (RSRN) is a new project that aims to build on conservation efforts of the last 20 years and lay the foundations for species recovery. The RSRN is a shared ambition for red squirrels in Northern England and Southern Scotland and is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Working at a super-landscape scale, this significant investment in species conservation must achieve lasting change within five years so that the future of an iconic species is secured as part of a natural and functioning ecosystem. This will be supported by a well-connected and resilient network of volunteers within a wider network of engaged and aware local residents and visitors.
Purpose of the role
The West Coast has been identified as the priority area for engagement. This is because there is an opportunity, not only for encouraging reds back to the area, but for us to link with some key community activity.
Workington, Whitehaven and Cockermouth are areas where red squirrels are still present and where there are active volunteer groups working to protect the species.
We are looking for someone who has a real passion for Cumbria and its wildlife, who can connect with and build positive relationships with the local community, encouraging them to 'take action'. Previous experience working in a community engagement role or regularly with volunteers will be critical to this role, along with a positive, can-do attitude and the ability to connect people of all ages to their local wildlife and environment. Previous experience in red squirrel conservation activities, such as monitoring and surveying, would also be desirable.
Please note that an enhanced DBS check will be required for this role.
The closing date for applications is 09:00 am on Thursday 28 August 2025.
Interviews will be held at our offices in Carlisle at Gosling Sike, the week commencing 15 September 2025.
Applications: Completed application forms should be returned with a supporting statement as a separate attachment outlining the candidate's suitability for the post and emailed to admin@cumbriawildlifetrust.org.uk.
Postal applications should be returned to Claire Shepherd, HR Manager, Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Plumgarths, Crook Road, Kendal, Cumbria, LA8 8LX.
CV's will not be considered
