We are on the look-out for volunteers to check the Belted Galloway herd at Eycott Hill Nature Reserve or potential new Exmoor ponies at Clints Quarry. If you are local to the area, are confident with animals and walking, and can dedicate a few hours a week we'd love to hear from you.

More information

At Eycott Hill, we have a team of volunteers who check the herd on a daily basis alongside our graziers, the Irving family, and our project staff. However, we would like to strengthen the teams' numbers - as during the summer months we usually have fewer volunteers due to holidays and breaks.

At Clints Quarry, we would like to reintroduce Exmoor ponies as part of the grazing regime.  This would be a new team and we are hoping to develop it along similar lines to the work of the Eycott Hill volunteers.

The key to this role is to enjoy being amongst livestock.  Initial training will include health and safety awareness, particularly as you may be lone working, with the opportunity to shadow an existing livestock checker.

In addition, volunteers must be happy to keep in touch with other checkers (currently via WhatsApp, email and spreadsheets) to keep the rota running smoothly and ensure the wellbeing of the animals.

We are looking for several volunteers for this role.
