Head to the coast this spring and discover seals, birds and a whole lot more, at South Walney Nature Reserve, our stunning wildlife site near Barrow. Cumbria Wildlife Trust is running a free Family Fun Day on Saturday 29 April from 10.00am to 3.00pm.

There’s a jam-packed programme of activities for all the family to choose from, including:

  • See what sea critters lurk in our mobile rockpool
  • Go on a guided wildlife walk with a ranger
  • Get creative with arts and crafts in the visitor cabin and hides
  • Try your hand at Post-It Poetry
  • Chill and stretch - yoga with a view

Keziah Taylor, Assistant Reserves Officer for Cumbria Wildlife Trust is running the event: “We’re looking forward to seeing a good crowd at South Walney on Saturday 29 April! Whatever your age, you’ll find something to enjoy, whether it’s a wildlife-spotting walk on one of the waymarked trails, arts and crafts or a chilled session of outdoor yoga. Refreshments will be available - why not make a day of it and bring a picnic? There’s no need to book, just turn up and all activities are free. We look forward to seeing you there!”

Keziah explains why this is such an important site: “South Walney Nature Reserve is full of wildlife interest. We have stunning views across Morecambe Bay, it’s a fantastic place for bird watching, with 250 bird species recorded (many are passage migrants on their way to or from breeding grounds) and it’s home to the only grey seal colony in the county! The grey seals can be seen playing in the water at high tide, along with thousands of wildfowl and wader birds, from hides on the nature reserve. With careful conservation measures in place, and by ensuring that people avoiding activities that disturb the wildlife, these wonderful species keep returning to this special location.”

Sorry, no dogs are allowed on the nature reserve, apart from assistance dogs. Please note there is strictly no access to the beach where the seals are located.
