The Moss Carder bumblebee is at critical risk of extinction in the UK.  Cumbria has some of the last remaining records in England.  In order to take action to save this species, we need to know where and how many there are.  As a volunteer surveyor, once a month you will walk one of our transects, identifying and counting bumblebee species you see along the way.

Transects are between 1 and 5km, and can be road verges or open fellside.  Full bumblebee identification training is provided, and loan of a bee net for the summer.  Moss Carders can be hard to distinguish from the Common Carder so a keen, patient eye is essential.
