This year our photography competition is focusing on wildlife on your doorstep

We may still be in lockdown, but the flowers are in bloom, bees are buzzing, insects are scurrying about and our birds are nesting. Cumbria may be famous for its dramatic peaks and vast lakes, but you don’t need to take more than a few steps from your door to see some wonderful nature and wildlife.

That’s why our 2020 photography competition is all about the little things as Andrea Simpson, Publications Officer, explains: “None of us can travel far at the moment, so we decided that this year's photo competition entries should celebrate the endlessly interesting and amazing species you can encounter right where you live.

“Previously, entrants have sent us lots of wonderful dramatic landscape views of the lakes and fells but this year, we want to see what’s right on your doorstep – in your garden, yard or window box. Whether it’s interesting animal behaviour, stand-out flora, unusual insects or familiar garden birds, capturing these encounters on camera is a wonderfully satisfying way to stay connected with nature, especially as our world has become so much smaller recently.

“The 12 winning photographs will feature in our 2021 calendar and you could be in with a chance of winning a prize too! The overall winner will receive a £100 voucher for camera equipment, second place will receive a £50 voucher and third place will receive a £25 voucher. So why not give it a go?”

The closing date for submissions is midnight on Sunday 28 June 2020 and entrants may enter a maximum of six images altogether. Entries should be submitted digitally by email to marketing@cumbriawildlifetrust.org.uk
