Phil Collier, whose company offers business and HR advice and support to SMEs in Cumbria, has been passionate about wildlife since a young age – so it seemed natural to him to become a business member of Cumbria Wildlife Trust.

Phil and his wife Jen had joined the charity when they moved to Cumbria back in March 2000, and felt, as business owners, they should now step up and become corporate members.

Phil says: “I’ve been passionate about birds and wildlife in general since my first holiday to Scotland at the age of five. As a small business, there is not as much we can do to reduce our carbon footprint, although we are passionate about doing our bit. So, for example, with a client in Penrith and a client in Newcastle, we endeavour to link our physical meetings together, with an early morning trip to Penrith and an afternoon meeting in Newcastle, thereby only necessitating a single journey or indeed, where we can, using the train rather than our car.”

“Being a little frustrated by only being able to make small differences, we decided to support a conservation charity that also promotes environmental awareness, and what better charity than our very own Cumbria Wildlife Trust.”

Michelle  Waller, Donor and Partnerships Manager for Cumbria Wildlife Trust said: “As well as doing all they can to reduce their businesses carbon footprint, Phil and Jen want to make a positive difference to nature and wildlife by supporting our work. It’s clear to see that Phil loves Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve (where we had a ‘net-walking’ meeting) and also South Walney – his local nature reserve. He’s a keen wildlife photographer too, as you can see from these photos! (see below) Next year, Phil aims to spot 200 bird species as part of #My200BirdYear (an initiative through Bird Watching magazine to encourage people to spot as many birds as they can). It’ll be great to hear how he gets on! Welcome Phil and thank you for your support.”

Corporate membership not only plays a vital role in supporting our work but is also an effective way to demonstrate that your company is active within the community and is sensitive to wildlife issues.
