Duddon Support Group run new children's wildlife gardening class

Young people get creative at Duddon Support Group event

The Duddon Support Group (DSG) took the initiative to mount a Cumbria Wildlife Trust stand at the Millom and Broughton Show. The aim was to boost people’s appreciation of local wildlife, highlight the group’s activities and raise awareness of DSG’s nearest reserve, Lowick Common.  Here, DSG members have actively begun monitoring and recording various species including damselflies, dragonflies and butterflies.

In a bid to engage with young people, DSG sponsored a new children’s class to design a garden for wildlife.  With involvement of schools, the class attracted many entries in the 8 -11 and 12 -16 years age groups and produced some excellent, well-thought-out designs. This made it very difficult for the group’s co-chairs to pick the prize winners!

Alongside good interaction with the many visitors to the stand, £200 was raised through the sale of CWT merchandise and a very popular tombola stall.
