Discover the Secret of the Sea

Mylo, Darragh and Canute the Quahog - characters in The Secret of the Sea Mylo, Darragh and Canute the Quahog - characters in The Secret of the Sea

This half term, why not introduce your children to Mylo the sea pen who loves to live in mud - ‘the gloopy, sticky kind’ - and his friend Brit, the delicate, five-legged brittle star?

They are just two in a cast of colourful and engaging characters in The Secret of the Sea, a new family story trail about the Irish Sea, published by the North West Wildlife Trusts.

The Secret of the Sea, written by Cumbrian-based author Anja Phoenix, takes children on an imaginative journey with Mylo, Brit and their friends. Join them as they explore ancient legends about the Irish Sea and find out fascinating facts about the creatures that live there. Some of the animals live deep down on the muddy sea bed, like Darragh the Dublin Bay prawn - and they also meet a shark on their travels!

To mark the launch of The Secret of the Sea, Cumbria Wildlife Trust is running two free family events during half term. Sea life experts will lead the activities and a high point on both days will be a story-telling of The Secret of the Sea.

The Rockpool Ramble at St Bees Beach is on Saturday 3 June, from 12.00pm-4.00pm. You’ll meet on the stunning rocky shore at St Bees and find out all about the little critters that the tide leaves behind.

The Guided Walk at Walney Island on Sunday 4 June, from 12.00pm-4.00pm takes you to the magical Piel Island, which gets cut off by the tide! Don’t worry though, you’ll be in the safe hands of an experienced guide.

Both events are open to children of all ages (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult). The walk from Walney to Piel is 1.5 miles each way and not suitable for buggies. The events are free, but places are limited so please book to avoid disappointment. Ring us on 01539 816300 or email mail@cumbriawildlifetrust.org.uk

A free copy of The Secret of the Sea will be given to all those who come to the events.
