'Have respect for nature and other living things. Try to see the human species as just one of many which interact with all others, but which has a special responsibility for the natural world.'

Peter Woodhead

Peter has been an active Cumbria Wildlife Trust volunteer since 2012, and a Trustee from 2014. He was instrumental in delivering our Dwarf Willow survey back in 2014 and as a member of the Cumbria Geoconservation Group has contributed to magazine articles and nature reserve interpretations and GeoTrail walks. He has a long-standing commitment to science education and, via the Trust, has provided support and opportunities for young people to become more involved in conservation in Cumbria.

'I am a Chartered Biologist and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, with considerable experience of field survey work, research projects, data collection, analysis and presentation, and also of committee work in a range of roles. I have also been a member of The Wildlife Trusts for approximately 40 years, both in Cheshire and then, after moving house, transferring to the Trust in Cumbria.

I am committed to enthusing others with my passion for the natural world, explaining the science of ecology, and for enabling young people especially, to share my knowledge and understanding derived from nearly 60 years studying and learning. I contribute substantially to higher education student learning under the existing Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Cumbria. I represent the Trust as an ‘Employer Partner’ on a joint Steering Group with academic colleagues at the University.

I would exhort all people, young and older, to act for nature, and would offer the following advice:

  • Be CURIOUS.  Want to know more, and always ask questions, such as: “what is that?”; “what is it called?’’; ‘’why is that the way it is?’’; ‘why does that occur?’’; ‘’how can I find out more?’’
  • Get INVOLVED. Volunteer to help, and in doing so:
  • LEARN new things
  • Look for CONNECTIONS between living things and with their surroundings: keep asking ‘’Why?’’
  • When asked what you might like for a present, REQUEST something to help you to observe more and better; to read about wildlife and to understand better the natural world and living organisms
  • Have RESPECT for nature and other living things: try to see the human species as just one of many which interact with all others, but which has a special responsibility for the natural world
  • Above all, ENJOY observing and being a part of nature
  • RECALL a quote from a famous Scientist: 'Look deep into nature, and you will understand everything better.'  Albert Einstein.'
