Passing On the Secrets of Cumbria’s Hay Meadows
Cumbria is nationally recognised as an important resource for hay meadows, however even here this U.K and Cumbria priority conservation habitat amounts to less than 500 hectares. Recent years have seen a decline in traditional hay meadows by over 90% in the U.K. This decline has occurred due to changes in meadow management with ploughing, drainage, reseeding and the addition of fertilisers as primary factors. What is more this resource has become fragmented, isolated and is often found outside the current farming context in areas such as road side verges, stream sides and even church yards.

July storms wreak havoc – and create valuable habitat!
The strong winds we experienced in the early morning of July 16th did not only wake me up repeatedly – they also tested some of our trees to their limits and beyond. As Radio Cumbria warned of trees down on the roads, I thought it would be a good idea to check out some of our woodland reserves.

Cumbria Wildlife Trust promotes Payroll Giving across region
Cumbria Wildlife Trust wants organisations across Cumbria to set up a tax-effective giving scheme for employees to give to charity.

Payroll giving is a simple way for employees to donate to a UK registered charity of their choice from their earnings. Their donation is deducted from their gross pay, affording them tax relief on their donations.

For employers, Payroll Giving can improve their corporate social responsibility, which in turn will improve their public image. It can also aid in the retention of staff. All employers need to do is set up a contract with a Payroll Giving Agency who will transfer the donations to the charity on the employers behalf. It’s that easy!

Cumbria Wildlife Trust requires donations to maintain the 40 nature reserves around Cumbria, which include ancient woodlands, flower-rich meadows, extensive dune systems, limestone pavements and outstanding wetland habitats. Through Payroll Giving, the Trust will be able to gain regular and reliable donations to plan for the future.

Helen Duxbury, Development Manager at Cumbria Wildlife Trust says:
“This is a great scheme that costs the employee less to give more. We are extremely grateful to anyone that gives to us in this way as it is simple and dependable”

If you are an employee and would like us to ask your organisation about setting up a payroll giving scheme, please phone us on 01539 816300 or alternatively online query form about tax-effective giving.
