Beached Art 2011

Sunday, 07 August 2011, 11:00am - 4:00pm

Bring your spade, your friends and a sense of fun and join Cumbria Wildlife Trust in creating a sand menagerie of marine wildlife on the beach at St Bees on Sunday 7 August.

We are inviting all beach lovers to take part in designing and making sand sculptures to illustrate how wonderful our living seas truly are. Basking sharks, starfish, minke whales, cuttlefish and periwinkles are just a few of the amazing creatures that you can create on the day but there are many more to chose from.

You don’t need to be an expert; you just need a bit of enthusiasm.

Fun to be had on the day includes rockpool rambles, bird walks, artist workshops, kiddies’ activities and face painting.

Read on for more information!

Taking Part
On the day we will be dividing a section of the beach into lovely 3m x 3m plots for you to create your sand sculpture in. Competition entry only costs £1 for each person in your sculpting team (excluding under 5s who can help for free). We recommend a maximum of 5 people per plot, so if you're bringing the extended family why not book two plots? Nothing like a spot of side-by-side sand sculpting to really stoke that competitive fire!

What to sculpt?
Need some ideas for the subject of your sand sculpture? Well the aim of the day to is to celebrate the incredible diversity of life that we have right here in the Irish Sea on our Cumbrian doorstep, so you could choose any one of hundreds of local coastal and marine species. These include some big boys such as basking sharks, grey seals, harbour porpoises as well as a whole host of little guys like the beadlet anemone, the common starfish and the adorable tompot blenny (a challenging sculpt that I would love someone to undertake!).

For more inspiration check the MarLIN website (The Marine Life Information Network) at www.marlin.ac.uk

TOP TIP: It may be a good idea to bring some pictures of your chosen creature along with you on the day as a handy reminder.

What's the plan?
The day of fun will start from 11am with the sand sculpture competition officially running from 12 - 2pm. Our special judging panel will be doing their best Simon Cowell impressions after this, followed by the all-important prize-giving, and the day will wrap up around 4pm.

Throughout the day we will have an exciting range of other activities, including rock pool rambles led by the head aquarist at The Lake District Coast Aquarium, seaside-themed artist workshops and face-painting, and a chance to try land-kiting and kite-surfing with Cumbria Power Kite Club. Generally a great day out for

TOP TIP: While we will endeavor to have some spare competition plots available on the day, to ensure your place and allow us to create sufficient plots we strongly recommend advance booking. Submit the form below now!
