10 Junior and Infant Schools in the Cockermouth catchments have been funded with educational membership to the Cumbria Wildlife Trust by Cockermouth Round Table. Membership of this organisation will enable the schools to tap into a wealth of expertise and resources that will benefit the schools, the teachers and the pupils.
With the environment being a major topic presently, it is hoped getting the children involved at an early age will encourage them throughout their life to appreciate the wonderful diversity found in nature. Cumbria Wildlife Trust has an exciting portfolio of activities aimed at the education sector to encourage young people to understand the natural world around them and in so doing help support the schools curriculum.
As part of the membership, the schools involved will be asked to participate in a competition, run by Cockermouth Round Table, the outcome of which is hoped will be prominently exhibited within the town in the Spring.
Cumbria Wildlife Trust is the only voluntary organisation devoted solely to the conservation of the wildlife and wild places of Cumbria. The Trust stands up for wildlife, creates wildlife havens, and seeks to raise environmental awareness.
Cockermouth Round Table, part of the International Round Table Group, is a social club for young men whose activities include raising funds, which are distributed to local, regional and national charities, groups or even local individuals.
A photo opportunity is being organised for local press, whereupon members of Cockermouth Round Table and The Cumbria Wildlife Trust will present membership packs to several local Head Teachers.
