Cedar Manor is a family-owned small, luxury hotel in Windermere. The owners, Caroline and Jonathan Kaye, have improved their hotel grounds for wildlife over the last two years and below they tell us about what they did.

We bought a small greenhouse and started to grow herbs such as parsley, lemon balm, mint and chives.  We also, attempted to grow dill and basil with limited success. Over recent years we fitted water butts to most of our down pipes and can water most of our garden from that source alone.  Only in those rare droughts do we have to resort to connecting our hose to the mains water supply.

We needed to reseed the lawn in spring, with a lot of help from our friends at Green Thumb.  We also used this opportunity to re-surface our drive and carpark.  We have never before had enough time to close the business and complete this work.  We decided to use a resin surface and have been very pleased with the results.  The opportunity presented itself with no lawn, and an excavated drive to create new flower beds and borders.

Our ambition was to introduce bees to the gardens and take advice from our gardener, Kate, to come up with a planting scheme that will give us interest, colour, different heights and species – with as much perennial, British planting that we could find and plants that keep the bees happy.

Our new driveway and carpark were completed during April 2021 and the new lawn was sown. Having ordered several tonnes of mushroom compost, we set to prepare the soil for our new borders and replenished our existing beds and borders.

Plants ordered, with a second set ordered for a few weeks later, they duly arrived and were planted. We have adhered to strict guidelines for planting and our garden design.

The final step in the third lockdown was to introduce lots of feeders for different species – a bug hotel, butterfly feeders and various bird feeding platforms were added. We then took delivery of two beehives and two colonies of bees have been residing in our gardens ever since.

We had a small amount of honey in the autumn and expect to generate around 90-150 jars per hive this year.

The result has seen an increase in smaller birds visiting the garden, bees and insects and even here in Windermere, deer can be seen wandering through during the day and night.
