Setting up your own nature club
I would like to set up a nature club for children.  How do I go about it?

Please contact Katie Keighley, the Watch Co-ordinator for Cumbria.  She will arrange to meet you and discuss the potential of setting a group in your area.  She will also be able to talk to you about Watch in more detail and the level of support that Cumbria Wildlife Trust can provide.

If I set up a nature club for children, what kind of activities could we get involved with?

Watch groups give children the opportunity to explore local areas, discover wildlife and get involved in practical activities. Activities typically include:

  • pond dipping
  • creating environmental artwork
  • waste recycling
  • wildlife surveys
  • sponsored nature walks
  • litter picks
  • wild flower identification
  • wildlife surveys
What kind of qualifications do I need to have to become support a volunteer Watch Leader?

Watch leaders come from a variety of backgrounds, but all share an enthusiasm for working with children and young people, a passion for nature and the environment.

All we ask is that you complete a short application form and agree to have a Criminal Records Check.  Once this is complete and we have received your references, we usually ask you to work with another Watch Leader for a short period of time, until you gain the confidence to run your own group. We will also give you ongoing support and access to resources.

I would like to volunteer with a Watch group, but do not necessarily wish to lead one.  Is there anything I can do?

You could become a Watch Helper, which means that you play a supporting role.  There is a similar recruitment process and we also ask that you agree to have a Criminal Records Check.

What kind of support will I receive as a registered Watch Leader or Helper?

You can attend free training events in Cumbria, which also provides the opportunity for Leaders to meet and exchange ideas and experiences.  First Aid training is also available.

My child already attends a Wildlife Gardening or Eco/Environment club through school.  Can they become a Watch club?

Yes...
