May 2009

Dear

Last week saw local dignatories, trustees and volunteers celebrating the new extension of Barkbooth Lot Nature Reserve at its official opening with Tim Scoones, producer of BBC Springwatch. Its a great place to visit particularly at this time of year with the bluebells just beginnning to show. We were also had another reason to celebrate this week as Lord Inglewood accepted two cheques from the Furness Building Society and the Tourism and Conservation Partnership towards the tireless work of the Trust's Save our Squirrels project.

Barkbooth Lot Nature Reserve extension Officially Opened

An extension of the land at Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Barkbooth Lot Nature Reserve, near Crosthwaite, has been officially opened by Tim Scoones, Producer of Springwatch. A celebration event was held among the emerging bluebells at the woodland on Thursday 23 April.

Barkbooth Lot is a mosaic of scrub, bracken, wetland and flower-rich grassland with two small man-made tarns, situated towards the head of the Winster valley.  It represents a rare mix of habitats in an area where most low fell land has been improved by agriculture. We have been fortunate to be able to double the size of this wonderful nature reserve. More

Focus on: Bloomin beautiful bluebells on our nature reserves

Its bluebell time! What better place to see them at their best than on Cumbria Wildlife Trust Nature Reserves. There are fantastic shows in the south of the county at Dorothy Farrers Spring Wood Nature Reserve and at our new wooded extension at Barkbooth Lot Nature Reserve. Wreay Woods Nature Reserve offers a great display in the north of the county. Whilst there why not take some pictures and submit them to our flickr page?

Giving a virtual green gift from Cumbria Wildlife Trust not only helps to support our work conserving Cumbria's wildlife but also offers a unique and special gift for your loved ones.
