Cumbria Wildlife Trust has launched their new 'Uplands for Juniper' project with a £56,332 funding boost from SITA Trust for their project.
Volunteers will survey and restore juniper trees
Thanks to the funding, this project will engage volunteers to work on enriching Cumbria's wonderful juniper sites. Volunteers will maintain, improve and expand juniper scrub through informed and targeted survey work running alongside restoration through planting.
Expanding important juniper habitat
Juniper is UK Biodiversity Action Plan listed habitat and this project shall make significant contributions to targets set within both the England and Cumbria BAP (achieving 100% of the county's expansion target and meeting 20% of the English target for maintenance of juniper habitats).
Assuring the future of this rare species
Mike Douglas, who has taken up the reins as project officer for Cumbria Wildlife Trust, said; 'The Uplands for Juniper project provides a great opportunity to assure the future of this rare species within the county. It will be exciting to work on a project which aims to maintain a species which is so important to our Cumbrian heritage and biodiversity.'
Jools Granville of SITA Trust said 'We are pleased to be able to fund such an exciting and beneficial project run by the incredible team at Cumbria Wildlife Trust and the people of Cumbria who will volunteer their time'.
SITA Trust provides funding through the Landfill Communities Fund. Funding is available for available for projects that enhance communities and enrich nature.
