Cumbria Biodiversity Partnership (CBP) consists of a wide range of organisations including statutory agencies, local authorities, representatives of farming and landowning interests, research and educational institutions, businesses, voluntary organisations and community groups. The objective of the Partnership is to:
-
Implement national biodiversity targets at the local level ;
-
Address local priorities not identified in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan.
-
Engender greater awareness and understanding of Cumbria’s biodiversity and wider participation in its conservation.
Cumbria Wildlife Trust hosts and supports the Local Biodiversity Manager who is responsible for coordinating the work of the CBP. Together the Partnership fundraises for and delivers a suite of local projects including Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s (CWT) Hay-Day and Tree Sparrow projects. They monitor and report on biodiversity action in the county whilst looking to integrate it into local and regional policy. The Partnership also represents Cumbria on biodiversity issues at the regional and national level whilst promoting it closer to home.
The Cumbria Biodiversity Action Plan (CBAP) was launched in November 2001 and outlines how national biodiversity targets will be delivered in Cumbria. The CBAP provides over 700 detailed actions for the conservation of priority species and habitats within the county. A huge butterfly (on display at CWT head office) was signed by members of the Cumbria Biodiversity Partnership and former President of the Wildlife Trusts Professor David Bellamy as a commitment of their support for the new plan and a pledge to work together to conserve and enhance the biodiversity of Cumbria
There are currently 268 priority species and 40 priority habitats identified for Cumbria (download this list below). The CBAP species and habitats are currently under review following the publication of the new Biodiversity Strategy for England in 2008.
Copies of the BAP and the summary can be downloaded as a PDF from the Biodiversity Partnership website at http://www.wildlifeincumbria.org.uk/.
