The rare hen harrier has once again returned to over-winter at Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve. It has been seen here since Cumbria Wildlife Trust began to restore the essential open habitat for them on this large, lowland raised peatbog nature reserve.

Pupils at Burgh-by-Sands Primary School, Carlisle are celebrating this week after one of their classmates won Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s 2009 Christmas Card Competition. Neve Sowerby, seven, produced a heartwarming drawing of farm animals and wildlife spreading the Christmas message of peace and goodwill.

Cumbria Wildlife Trust voices concerns over planning of power stations

Cumbria Wildlife Trust has expressed concern about Government announcements made this week that the new, unelected Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC), will be able to fast-track major projects such as ports and power stations. This is a particularly relevant development for Cumbria as three sites in the county have been selected to host nuclear power stations.

Volunteers make a difference at Drumburgh Moss National Nature Reserve

Cumbria Wildlife Trust and Hadrian’s Wall Heritage Ltd have celebrated Make a Difference day on the 31 October 2009 in advance. They held a joint conservation work party at Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Drumburgh Moss National Nature Reserve, in the north of the county, making a positive difference to the peat bog habitat here.

Cows help conserve rare butterflies

shorthorn.jpgCows are once again doing their bit for rare butterflies in a peaceful corner of South Lakeland.

Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Barkbooth Lot Nature Reserve is one of only a handful of sites away from the Morecambe Bay limestones were the scarce high brown fritillary butterfly breeds.  Once widespread across England, Cumbria is one of the last remaining strongholds for this species that has become extinct from 94% of its former range in the last 50 years.  Cumbria Wildlife Trust manages the site to provide perfect conditions for this large, showy, orange and black butterfly.  By grazing the site in autumn and winter the cows create ideal conditions that the butterflies love.
