Cumbria Wildlife Trust is urging keen amateur photographers to enter its wildlife photography competition. They are asking you to enter your Cumbrian autumn and winter wildlife shots into one of five categories.

 
Marine Protected Area recommendations revealed

As stakeholder recommendations for a network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) around England are today made public, The Wildlife Trusts remind the Government of its commitment to create a well managed ecologically coherent network covering at least 25% of English waters by 2016.

Cumbria’s red squirrels receive a major financial boost from local businesses

Two Cumbrian businesses have once again made a significant financial contribution to help save Cumbria’s red squirrels. Furness Building Society’s Red Squirrel Premier Savings Account has raised over £21,500 in the last year for this iconic animal while the sale of special red squirrel goods by Lake District Estates has contributed £1156.65 to its survival.

This Saturday (23 July) head down to Barrow Park for a day of fun-filled wildlife activity. Come along to the Wildlife Bonanza between 12.00pm and 4.00pm and have your face painted, explore the lake as you pond-dip or discover the wildlife treasures on the nature trail.
 
Tanzanian visitors help out on Clints Quarry Nature Reserve

Vital scrub clearance was made possible at Clints Quarry Nature Reserve last week when Tanzanian visitors and their hosts from the Cumbria-Rungwe Community Link (CRC Link) spent the day on the reserve. The nine Tanzanians and 21 Cumbrians helped reserves officer Pete Jones cut down brambles, remove tree saplings and clear litter from the former quarry, near Egremont.

 
Cormorant population attacked

Cumbria Police have launched an investigation following the destruction of a large number of cormorant eggs from a nesting colony at Rockcliffe Marsh north of Carlisle, Cumbria Wildlife Trust, who monitor breeding birds on the site are assisting in this process.

 
Dozens of school children revel in wild discoveries at Solway nature reserve

Dozens of primary school children took part last week at an Education Week at Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s  Bowness-on-Solway Nature Reserve. The week was run by the Solway Wetlands Landscape Partnership Scheme and brought children from Houghton Primary School, St Bede’s in Carlisle, St Michael’s in Bothel and Kirkbride Primary School.
